At my campus, I am the only Computer Science teacher. My challenge is how to increase interest in the courses being taught a Marshall High School and to get additional teachers in order to teach the courses being taught. I currently teach Fundamentals of Computer Science, Computer Science PreAP, AP Computer Science Principles and for next year, App Development with Swift as a Dual Credit course and Computer Science III.
I feel that getting the course out there for the students would increase numbers in the course, in other words, exposing the students to what's available to them and them actually discovering what they could actually do. The way that is going to be done is by a showcase for each course. The students in the class will each have a project to showcase what they have created.
The Fundamentals of Computer Science class would showcase the website or game they have created using code.org. The Computer Science PreAP/.AP Computer Science classes would showcase their prototype for an app idea in keynote. The showcase for this would take place in the beginning of the Spring Semester. The students would display their products at Lunch, a time where there is a great deal of traffic to get them and the course the most exposure as possible. By doing this, student interest in the class can be increased and enrollment wouldn't be because the counselor just put the student in the class. It would be student choice.
By the numbers increasing, there would be a need to hire or get more teachers to teach the different courses. These courses not only benefit the building with more students taking Computer Science, it helps the students develop computational thinking which also increases the growth mindset. A student thinking computationally would most definitely increase student performance on assessments both locally at the school and also statewide on state assessments and globally on the SAT, ACT other assessments that are used for college and/or military qualification.
