Technology’s Influence on the Academic Achievement of Students
I. Focused Topic of the Action Research
The topic of my action research is the influence that technology has on the academic achievement of students. This topic can be broad. My focus will be on the acclimation to technology of the teacher and how that affects the academic achievement of the students.
A. Context
Teachers have different levels of acclimation to technology. Some teachers fight the technology and others embrace it. Technology use can be the pivotal advantage that students need to understand certain concepts. Whether that is in the form of videos or just having the proper tools at their disposal to practice locating a particular starting or ending point of a Calculus problem. My study will focus on math instruction.
B. Key Concepts
1. Teacher access
2. Student access
3. Teacher’s technology acclimation
4. Student’s technology acclimation
5. Student achievement with technology
6. Student achievement without technology
II. Purpose of Study
A. Teacher confidence with technology
A teacher ability to navigate technology can improve class participation, classroom management, student achievement and overall, how the class flows and is being taught
B. Student confidence with technology
A student who is confident with technology can get to the resources that are available to him or her. How they navigate the technology can improve their understanding of what is actually occurring within a particular concept which opens up other clarifying questions that the student may have that can deepen their understanding
III. Fundamental Research Question
A. Primary Question
RQ1: In what ways do student and teacher acclimation to technology affect student outcomes in learning?
B. Secondary Questions
RQ2: In what ways do student and teacher access to the technology affect student achievement?
RQ3: What are the ways technology have affected student outcomes?
IV. Research Design and Data Collection (Qualitative, Quantitative or Mixed-Methods)
A. Quantitative
The data shall be collected through a form designed on Microsoft Forms that will collect the data into a spreadsheet on Microsoft Excel. The data will then be put into charts and other media to display the outcomes of the study.
B. Description of Research Design
Students, teachers and parents/guardians will be asked to complete a form asking questions about the access to technology, use of technology and the student achievement from the use of technology. This will take place over the course of nine weeks to gather as much detail about the topic as possible. The data will be collected and analyzed, and the results of the data will be delivered. The data will be then shown to the Principal. It has been shown that the use of technology can improve the achievement of students when used in the correct manner.
V. Literary Review Focus
The literary review will focus on books and journal articles that will provide direction and support to the topic of this action research. These resources will provide a foundation for the questions for the research that will be provided to the students, teachers, and parents that is relevant to the study.
